Founding Member, Advising Director
Dr. Vicky Kalogera is the Advising Director of the DSFP and the Daniel I. Linzer Distinguished University Professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Northwestern University. Professor Kalogera is a co-founder and the Director of the Center for Interdisciplinary Exploration and Research in Astrophysics (CIERA) at Northwestern; she is also the director of the NSF-Simons AI Institute for the Sky (NSF-Simons SkAI) and on the Board of Directors of the Giant Magellan Telescope Organization (GMTO) Corporation. Her research group has made ground-breaking discoveries in many areas, including: the astrophysics of black holes and neutron stars, how these compact objects form and evolve in multiple star systems, and the demographics of these systems as traced via gravitational wave observations by the LIGO Scientific Collaboration (LSC).
Prior to joining the faculty at Northwestern, Vicky received her Ptihio (B.S.) in Physics in 1992 from the University of Thessaloniki in Greece and her Ph.D. in Astronomy in 1997 from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She then joined the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics as a CfA Postdoctoral Fellow and in 2000 she was awarded the inaugural Clay Postdoctoral Fellowship before becoming an Assistant Professor Northwestern in 2001.
