Workshop Description
This workshop was held at Columbia University to assess the detection of optical counterparts of gravitational wave events by LSST. LSST will be the most sensitive instrument for observing optical counterparts of GW events in both depth and speed. Binary neutron star (NS) mergers will be visible with LSST out to 1 Gpc. Binary black hole (BH) mergers and BHNS mergers will be much fainter and possibly accessible only with LSST. The science enabled by optical observations includes testing cosmology, general relativity, and measuring the NS equation of state.
