Markus Rabus

Assistant Professor

Markus Rabus is an observational astronomer and Assistant Professor at the Universidad Católica de la Santísima Concepción in Chile (UCSC-Chile). His research focuses on time-domain astronomy, particularly through the analysis of wide-field survey data from projects such as TrES, HAT-South, MiNDSTEp, TESS and currently an LCO keyproject and the Legacy Survey of Space & Time (LSST).

He is actively involved with the Vera C. Rubin Observatory, where he first joined the Transients and Variable Stars Science Collaboration and later became a member of the Dark Energy Science Collaboration. As an in-kind contributor to the Rubin System Integration, Test, and Commissioning team, he works on the scientific validation of time-series photometry and astrometry. He also served a two-year term on the Rubin Observatory Users Committee.

Before joining UCSC-Chile, Markus was a TESS Scientist at Las Cumbres Observatory and held an Associate Specialist position at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Earlier in his career, he served as a Support Astronomer for the Max Planck 2.2m telescope at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile.

He earned his Ph.D. in Astrophysics from the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias in Spain. In addition to his research, Markus is dedicated to science education and public outreach, participating in events such as Astronomy on Tap and other community engagement initiatives.
