Adam Miller

Director

Dr. Adam Miller is the Director of the DSFP and an assistant professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Northwestern University. Before joining the faculty, he was the Program Director for the DSFP. He leads a research group working at the intersection of wide-field astronomical surveys and data science to understand stellar evolution, and especially stellar death. One highlight includes the first fully automated discovery and public announcement of a supernova. He is the Director of a new time domain survey, the La Silla Schmidt Southern Survey, as well as a member of the Giant Magellan Telescope Science Advisory Committee and the Rubin/LSST Survey Cadence Optimization Committee. 

Prior to his work with the DSFP, Adam obtained a master’s from the University of Cambridge and a PhD from the University of California, Berkeley where he studied supernovae and variable stars using machine learning methods. After graduating he was a NASA Hubble Fellow at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory where he worked on the Palomar Transient Factory.
